John emphasizes that part of Landry’s life in this book, although as in his two previous biographies on Tom Landry, there’s plenty of football too. In his quiet way, he helped and brightened the lives of so many people. He was a devoted family man and worked hard for many charities. Considering his twenty straight winning seasons with different casts of players and his innovations and ability to foresee what a player’s ability might become, I believe him to be the best ever in his profession.īut I’m even more impressed by him as a Christian, one who lived his religion rather than just talking about it. We know that he was one of the greatest coaches the game of football has ever known. Some of my teammates believed they saw a trace of a smile on his face, but I was never sure. So with his gimpy knee and all, he lined up at quarterback and showed me exactly how he wanted the play run. Once during practice he didn’t like the way I ran a play. I think he came to see some value in my mobility, but I’m sure he didn’t always appreciate my scrambling or, perhaps, my attempts to, well, loosen him up a bit.
Yet we were able to work together because we had the same competitiveness and will and drive to win.
#Roger staubach book professional
I was hardly his ideal of what a professional quarterback should be, because instead of staying in the pocket and looking for receivers, I’d scramble, or take off running, if I couldn’t find anybody open. Tom Landry used his Christian faith as his guiding light in life, helping him maintain those wonderful characteristics of honor, integrity, loyalty, and not only doing the very best you can but trying to do the right thing. He will always be a beacon of hope, someone we can look up to when our country’s leaders and sports figures don’t measure up to what we would like them to be. There is no one I admire and respect more.

But most of all, I’m grateful to my wife, Sandy, who spent almost as much time as I did getting this project into shape.
